John is working on two books, both of
which have a similar theme, Organizational Memory. Most
current knowledge management initiatives focus on the present, on
how leaders can exploit knowledge to achieve current organizational
objectives. The time is right to consider the future. In
other words what should leaders do today to ensure the next
generation will know what they knew. John's defines organizational
memory as:
Organizational memory is the body of knowledge, past, present, and
future, required to achieve the strategic objectives of an
organization. Enabled by technology, leadership, and culture,
organizational memories include repositories of artifacts,
communities of people, and organizational knowledge sharing
processes, which focus on achieving the organizational vision.

knowledge management domain; however, it is unique in that
the focus on what we should be doing now (or soon) to ensure
the next generation of organizational leaders know what
we knew. In other words are we creating organizational
memories today, which will be useful in five, 10, or 100
