The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most important cultural locations in Abu Dhabi.  This magnificent Mosque took about 10 years to build and is a “must-see” for anyone visiting Abu Dhabi.  It is the most beautiful manmade structure we have ever seen. In many ways, it is difficult to believe this was completed in the 21st century as the workmanship is amazing and really not what we are used to seeing in “modern” construction.

Version 2

Surprising to some, the Mosque is very welcoming and invites people from all faiths to visit and learn about Isalm or just admire the beautiful building.  There certainly is no “hard sell” about Islam or any comments about other religions.  The Mosque is a place of peace and tranquility.

We took a guided tour, lead by a young Emirati, and we think this is the best way to see the Mosque.  Both men and women are expected to dress conservatively, strictly no shorts, muscle shirts etc for men.  Women must wear an abaya (long, loose-fitting robe) and a shaya (headscarf), both of which are provided free of charge.

For those who cannot visit the Mosque, we highly recommend this Google Virtual Tour.

Below are a few photos that try to capture the beauty of the Mosque, but really do not do it justice 🙁
